From Road Cut-Off to Restoration in Joypurhat: Community, Action and Light & Administration Act Together

On 28 April 2026, the only access road connecting a historic Shiva temple and a nearby Hindu indigenous cluster village in Belamla, Joypurhat, was cut off, temporarily isolating the community and disrupting daily movement, religious practices, and essential access to services.

Action and Light  responded promptly with field-level engagement, standing beside the affected community, documenting concerns, and facilitating communication among residents, local stakeholders, and the administration. The organization played a key role in maintaining calm on the ground and ensuring that the voices of the marginalized community were effectively communicated.

A crucial role was  played by the local administration, particularly the Assistant Commissioner (Land), who visited the site, engaged directly with both parties, and worked in the field to de-escalate tensions. Their timely presence and constructive approach helped create an environment for peaceful dialogue and resolution.

A local Hindu resident shared, “This road is our only connection to the temple and outside world. When it was suddenly cut, we felt completely isolated and worried about our daily survival and religious activities.”

An indigenous community member stated, “We are a small and vulnerable community. After the road was blocked, even emergencies became very difficult. The support from organizations and administration gave us hope again.”

Through coordinated efforts among local people, Action and Light  and the local administration, the situation was resolved peacefully. As a result, the road was reconstructed on 2 May 2026, restoring access and bringing relief to the affected community.

This incident highlights the importance of field-level administrative engagement, community-based response, and collaborative humanitarian action in protecting vulnerable populations and ensuring peaceful coexistence.
