Joypurhat, Bangladesh – Knowledge-based development organization Action and Light has launched a 10-day mobile indigenous seed distribution campaign aimed at strengthening household food security, promoting climate-resilient agriculture, and conserving local agricultural biodiversity.
As part of the ongoing initiative, approximately 550 households across different locations in Joypurhat District received 11 varieties of indigenous vegetable seeds today. The campaign seeks to enhance access to nutritious food, encourage homestead gardening, and support sustainable livelihoods through community-based action.
The initiative has brought together volunteers and citizens from diverse social, professional, religious, ethnic, and gender backgrounds, reflecting a shared commitment to inclusive development and community resilience. Such broad participation demonstrates the potential of collective action in addressing food security and environmental challenges at the grassroots level.Observed in the local cultural context of Ashura (Muharram), the initiative has fostered social cohesion and mutual understanding among people of different faiths and communities. The campaign has become a platform for promoting solidarity, volunteerism, and collective action for food security and environmental sustainability. During the distribution activities, Mr. Suman Shil, Head of the Community Food Bank (Giyati Gola) of Action and Light , Dr. Sazzadul Bari, Executive Director of Action and Light, along with Mr. Belal Hossain, Mr. Al Imran, and other volunteers and community leaders, personally distributed indigenous vegetable seeds to households and engaged community members in discussions on the importance of seed preservation, household nutrition, biodiversity conservation, and climate-resilient agriculture. Their interactions helped raise awareness about the role of indigenous seeds in building sustainable and resilient food systems while strengthening community bonds across religious and social divides.
By promoting the use and preservation of indigenous seeds, the campaign contributes to safeguarding local genetic resources while encouraging environmentally sustainable agricultural practices. The initiative aligns with broader efforts to strengthen climate adaptation capacities and improve the resilience of vulnerable households.
