Ruma’s Journey Towards Justice by Gender Equality Forum

For many women in Bangladesh, financial hardship and domestic violence remain significant barriers to accessing justice. Ruma* (name changed), a woman from a financially disadvantaged family in Panchbibi, Joypurhat, faced such challenges when her husband allegedly subjected her to physical abuse, demanded dowry, and failed to provide her due dower (denmohor), maintenance, and clothing expenses.

Although determined to seek legal remedies, Ruma struggled to afford transportation, documentation, and other related expenses. Without financial assistance, pursuing justice seemed difficult.

Intervention: Removing Barriers to Justice

Under the MSF EmpowerHer Project, Action and Light provided Ruma with BDT 1,500 in financial assistance to help her access legal services.

The Dharanji Gender Equality Forum, led by its President, Nilufa Yasmin, also supported and encouraged her to pursue her rights through the formal justice system.

This combination of practical financial assistance and community support helped Ruma overcome an immediate obstacle to seeking justice.

Outcome: A Step Towards Justice

With this support, Ruma visited the Joypurhat District Legal Aid Office and submitted a complaint against her husband to the Senior Assistant Judge and District Legal Aid Officer. The office received her complaint, marking an important step in the formal legal process.

Although the case remains unresolved, Ruma has been able to raise her concerns through the appropriate legal channel and take a step towards securing her rights, dignity, and personal safety.

Key Learning

Ruma’s experience demonstrates how targeted financial assistance and community engagement can help disadvantaged women overcome barriers to justice. Even a modest contribution can make a meaningful difference when it enables a woman to access legal services and exercise her rights.

Action and Light remains committed to advancing gender equality, protecting human rights, and promoting access to justice for women and marginalised communities.
